Kellen Carter
6’2 - Class of 2029 - Starting Varsity as a freshman
When you think about what makes a true basketball player — toughness, leadership, coachability, and heart — checks every box and then some. What stands out most isn’t just his elite skillset, but how easy he is to coach.
Everyone who watches him play can immediately see the talent — the scoring ability, the court vision, the rebounding, the confidence. But what truly separates Kellen is his attitude. He’s the kind of player who makes everyone around him better. As a coach, he made my job easy — and this year, he made history.
Despite battling through injuries and what looked like a depleted roster late in the season, Kellen put the team on his back and led Marysville Bunsold to its first-ever middle school basketball championship, winning the title game by 11 points.
Earlier in the season, we faced a very big, athletic Springfield team that had only lost one game all year — to us. In that matchup, Kellen dropped 45 points, controlling the game from start to finish. It was one of the most impressive performances I’ve seen from a middle school player in 10 years of coaching and evaluating
A Coach’s Dream Player - The Competitions Nightmare
Kellen embodies everything you hope for in a young athlete. He’s humble, quiet, and respectful — but make no mistake, his quietness isn’t timidness. When Kellen speaks, people listen. He leads by example, through effort and consistency.
I coached him hard this year, demanding near perfection — and he handled it with maturity far beyond his age. He listens, works relentlessly, and always gives his best effort for his teammates.
If you tell three players to do something, Kellen is the first to act. He doesn’t wait for others to move. That mindset, paired with his talent, is why he’s special.
Production That Speaks for Itself - plus the Pat Mahomes affect
Kellen was a 20-point, 10-rebound player almost every night, with a high number of assists sprinkled in. He dominated both ends of the floor — rebounding in traffic, creating offense for others, and hitting clutch shots when it mattered most.
His basketball IQ and composure are elite. He never gets rattled, regardless of the moment or opponent. Even against top competition, like Dublin Karrer in the Final Four, he stayed locked in. They might’ve thought they had us — but you don’t give Patrick Mahomes another possession.
A Bright Future Ahead for Marysville High School Basketball
Over the past two decades, only four freshmen have earned varsity time in the program — and Kellen is on track to join that exclusive list. In fact, his combination of size, composure, and skill might make him one of the most prepared players we’ve ever seen enter high school.
He’s the first player to bring an 8th-grade championship to Marysville, and while others before him were talented, Kellen’s well-rounded game and leadership put him in a category of his own.
With a strong support system and a family that’s all in on helping him chase his dreams, Kellen’s ceiling is incredibly high. His work ethic will define his journey — and based on what we’ve seen, that journey is only just beginning.
