2026–27 Ohio boys basketball outlook • WBL • Research checked October 21, 2026.

The verified starting point

2025–26: 19–7 overall, 8–1 WBL.

Xavier Kelly earned first-team All-WBL and Division IV All-Ohio honorable mention.

The 2026 All-Ohio release lists Kelly as a sophomore averaging 11.5 points.

The runner-up has a clear opportunity

Van Wert finished one conference win behind unbeaten Shawnee. An 8–1 record and 19 overall victories give the Cougars a substantial foundation for the coming season, while keeping the championship distinction clear: Shawnee completed the league schedule without a defeat.

The next step is more demanding than repeating a good record against different opponents. Familiar WBL teams will know the Cougars' previous strengths, and this winter's group must demonstrate that its decision-making and supporting production have grown.

The awards list reaches beyond one scorer

Xavier Kelly's first-team league selection and All-Ohio honorable mention make him a central preseason reference. The official state release lists him as a sophomore. The archived roster also identifies Zach Crummey as a sophomore and Cohen Bragg as a junior; both earned second-team All-WBL recognition.

Keaten Welch and Griffin McCracken received third-team league honors, with Caden Collins an honorable mention. The historical roster lists McCracken as a senior, while Welch and Collins were juniors. Those details matter when separating possible continuity from the positions graduation may open.

Go beyond one conference

Depth becomes meaningful when roles are clear

A list of younger award recipients is encouraging evidence, but it is not a confirmed lineup. Current participation, health and responsibilities still have to be established through the program. The useful question is how many players can handle meaningful possessions rather than how many recognizable names appear in a preview.

Watch whether Van Wert can create a second good option when its first one is denied, and whether scoring opportunities remain balanced in a tight game. With the WBL title margin so narrow last season, dependable contributions from several positions could matter as much as any single statistical leap.
