Westland Basketball 2026–27: A Recognized Core and the Next District Challenge
Updated: 15 hours ago
Westland's recent progress has several documented parts: two first-team league selections, a younger second-team contributor and the OCC Capital coaching award.
OCC Division I • 2026–27 season outlook • Research checked October 21, 2026.
The conference recognition was broad
The official OCC workbook lists Breaker Heller and Antwon Pollard as junior first-team Capital Division selections. Jaydenn Deedat was a sophomore second-team selection. Joel Jackson received the division's coach-of-the-year award.
Those records give the new-season discussion more substance than a general statement that the program is improving. Several younger players were recognized, while the coaching award identifies the wider program work acknowledged by the league.
The senior roles still need to be accounted for
Uthman Sherif was a senior second-team All-OCC selection. Phoenix Funderburke and Sir Gathings, also listed as seniors, received special mention. A younger recognized core does not erase those responsibilities.
The current roster will establish which players return and how the next rotation is arranged. The important team question is whether Westland can preserve useful connections while filling the jobs that recognized seniors handled.

The district games set different tests
Westland beat Groveport Madison 45–44 in a district semifinal, then lost 60–51 to Olentangy Berlin in the final. Those results show both a finished one-possession elimination game and a subsequent matchup that required more.
Heller's Division I All-Ohio honorable mention came with a listed 13.4-point average. That is the state awards figure. The earlier team preview used a separate MaxPreps reporting set for its broader statistical line; those samples should remain distinct.
Watch how Westland balances individual scoring with the next pass when an opponent closes the first opening. The Cougars' recognized younger group gives readers several names to follow, but the development that matters most will be collective.
A new district opportunity must be earned by a new team. Last season supplies credible evidence of progress and a clear next challenge: make the group difficult to contain through an entire game, including the possessions when its preferred options are unavailable.
