Marysville Shows Fight in Tough Battle Against Upper Arlington
Marysville, Ohio — September 18, 2026
Marysville faced another demanding test Friday night, falling 28–0 at home to Upper Arlington. The Golden Bears scored twice in the first quarter and led 21–0 at halftime. The Monarchs could not find the end zone, but they kept competing. Their defense held Upper Arlington scoreless throughout the third quarter and allowed just one touchdown in the second half. That response mattered to head coach Mike Young. After the game, the Marysville Journal-Tribune reported that Young saw a clear difference in his team’s performance from the previous week’s loss to Hilliard Bradley. The scoreboard remained difficult, but Marysville gave itself something to build on as conference play approaches. (www.marysvillejt.com)
Carter Dunn Leads a Defense That Kept Fighting
Senior linebacker Carter Dunn has been one of the constants for Marysville. The Journal-Tribune named him the Monarchs’ player of the week for his work against Upper Arlington, describing a defender who covered ground from sideline to sideline. Through five games, Dunn has 53 total tackles, including 33 solo tackles, according to MaxPreps. (www.marysvillejt.com)
Dunn is surrounded by players who have produced throughout the opening five weeks. Senior defensive end Mamour “Mo” Saidy has 34 tackles and 7½ sacks. Senior safety Deacon Henry has 22 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown earlier this season against Westerville North. Junior Gage Henry has recorded two interceptions. Those are season totals, not individual statistics from Friday’s game. Together with the second-half scoreboard, though, they show the defensive foundation Marysville can take into its next matchup. The Monarchs were already down three touchdowns at halftime. They still came out and held a strong Upper Arlington team scoreless for the next quarter.
AJ Shroyer Keeps Working Through a Tough Assignment
Sophomore quarterback AJ Shroyer completed 11 of 24 passes for 101 yards against Upper Arlington. He also led Marysville on the ground with 34 yards on 12 carries. The Monarchs finished with 101 passing yards and 67 rushing yards overall. (www.maxpreps.com)
Shroyer has been asked to gain varsity experience against difficult competition. Against Upper Arlington, he had to help generate offense with both his arm and his legs. Marysville did not finish its drives the way it wanted, but each week gives the young quarterback more game experience heading into the OCC schedule.
Senior receiver Aloysius Roseburrough gave him a productive target Friday, catching four passes for 44 yards. That accounted for more than 40 percent of Marysville’s passing yardage. In the four games for which his individual receiving statistics are listed, Roseburrough has eight catches for 101 yards. (www.maxpreps.com)
Wimmers Remains Central to Marysville’s Offense
Senior running back Colin Wimmers has rushed for 514 yards on 89 carries with four touchdowns through five games. His biggest night came against KIPP Columbus, when he ran for 216 yards and two scores. He followed with 160 rushing yards in Marysville’s 15–10 win over Lancaster. (www.maxpreps.com)
A verified individual rushing total for Wimmers against Upper Arlington was not available in the public game summary. His season production still makes clear how important it will be for Marysville to create running room for him as conference play begins.
The offense also has players whose work is harder to capture in a standard box score. Junior Collin Burris is listed at offensive tackle, where blocking does not produce a rushing or receiving total.
Henry Brown is listed at receiver and cornerback, while junior Austin Lamb is listed at cornerback and receiver. Lamb has also recorded 65 yards on four kickoff returns in games with individual return statistics. No verified individual Upper Arlington game totals were available for Burris, Brown or Lamb. A Tough Stretch, With Conference Play Ahead
The loss moved Marysville to 2–3 after consecutive games against Hilliard Bradley and Upper Arlington. The first half of the schedule has included setbacks, but it has also included a 35–21 win over KIPP Columbus and a 15–10 win over Lancaster. Friday’s result does not erase those performances or the growth younger players are getting from meaningful varsity snaps. (www.maxpreps.com)
Marysville’s next opportunity comes Friday, September 25, at home against Dublin Jerome, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Jerome enters the OCC Cardinal matchup at 1–4 after a 42–29 loss to New Albany. The Monarchs will look to carry over their second-half defensive effort, give Shroyer an early offensive rhythm and get Wimmers more room to run. (www.maxpreps.com)
The Upper Arlington score was frustrating. Marysville’s response after halftime was still meaningful. Dunn and the defense showed they would keep playing, Shroyer continued learning in a demanding role, and the Monarchs now have a chance to put those lessons to work against Jerome.
Stat note: The public Upper Arlington game summary lists Shroyer’s and Roseburrough’s individual numbers and Marysville’s team yardage, but does not provide a complete individual stat sheet. All other player totals above are identified as season figures.
