2026–27 Ohio boys basketball outlook • GMC • Research checked October 21, 2026.

The verified starting point

2025–26: 24–2 overall, 16–0 GMC.

GMC ledger: 60.8 points scored and 39.5 allowed per league game.

Bryce Curry: 13.1 points in 26 recorded games; Roman Combs: 5.7 rebounds per game.

A league title leaves a demanding starting point

An unbeaten conference season gives Lakota West a clear reference for 2026–27. It also creates a misleading shortcut: assuming the next team will look exactly like the last one. The Firebirds' league record was built by a particular group, and the offseason has brought meaningful personnel news.

The verified starting point is the balance of last season's results. Lakota West combined the GMC's best conference record with a defense that kept league opponents below 40 points per game on the published table. Any discussion of repeating needs to include that collective work, rather than treating scoring talent as the entire explanation.

The personnel news changes the questions

WCPO reported Josh Tyson's announced move to La Lumiere and later reported Jeffrey Reynolds' enrollment at Lakota West. Those are separate developments: an announced departure and reported enrollment do not, by themselves, establish the final varsity roster or eligibility.

Curry and Combs were juniors in the 2026 All-Ohio release. That makes them important names to follow through the official roster process. Curry's scoring and Combs' finishing and rebounding give the discussion substance, while Tyson's former playmaking responsibilities cannot simply be assigned to another name on paper.

What to watch when the games begin

The first question is how the Firebirds organize possessions against pressure. Who initiates the offense, who becomes the outlet, and how much of the attack is created before the defense is set? Those are observations to make in games, not claims about a system that has not yet been seen.

Next comes the defensive connection. Watch whether a stopped drive ends the possession or becomes a second-chance opportunity. A returning scorer can help replace points; replacing a team's positioning, communication and rebounding is a different assignment.

The GMC championship and the state tournament are also separate tests. Last season's 16–0 league record did not guarantee a state title. This winter's appeal is discovering what this version of Lakota West can sustain, and what it learns to do differently.
