2026–27 Ohio boys basketball outlook • GMC • Research checked October 21, 2026.

The verified starting point

2025–26: 25–3 overall, 13–3 GMC.

2026 Division I state final: Princeton 59, Hilliard Bradley 28.

Kam Mercer: 14.2 points in 17 GMC-recorded games; Amir Phillips: 9.4 in 25.

A championship is history, and a new assignment

Princeton enters the next Ohio basketball season with something the rest of the GMC cannot claim: the 2026 Division I state championship. The Vikings' final against Hilliard Bradley was decisive, but its significance for this winter is more complicated than putting another trophy next to the program's name.

The title established a standard for the program. It did not freeze the roster. The season ahead will be judged on what the next group can produce, with each returning or incoming role needing to be established through current school information and actual games.

Separate the championship cast from the next roster

OHSAA's championship account identifies Amire Gill as the final's leading scorer and Rognny Santiago Lugo as another double-figure contributor. The 2026 All-Ohio release lists Santiago as a senior. His production belongs in the explanation of the title, rather than in an automatic count of next season's returning offense.

Mercer and Phillips supplied meaningful production in the conference database, but the sample sizes differ. Mercer's 17-game line should not be presented as a full 28-game season. Mercer's sophomore classification in the All-Ohio release makes him a relevant preseason name; current participation and the complete varsity roster still require the school's listing.

Amire Gill's class standing is also important. The official 2026 All-Ohio release lists him as a junior and a first-team Division I selection. That gives the Vikings another major name to follow through the current roster process, alongside the responsibilities that change after senior departures.

The interesting part is how responsibilities move

Princeton's offense will be worth studying when the first action does not create a shot. Championship teams can make late-clock decisions look comfortable. A new rotation has to develop its own answers, particularly when a teammate who handled a difficult possession is no longer available.

On defense, watch the relationship between ball pressure and the players behind it. A steal total does not show whether the next defender was in the right place. The early games should reveal how consistently the Vikings protect the basket after the first line is challenged.

There is also a useful league distinction: Princeton won the state title after finishing behind unbeaten Lakota West in the GMC. The Vikings have already demonstrated that a conference race and a March finish can tell different stories. That gives the 2026–27 follow-up more depth than a simple repeat-or-fail label.
