Gavin Betts Was Already Setting the Standard in Eighth-Grade Baseball
Updated: 2 days ago
Before Gavin Betts became a familiar name in Marysville High School baseball, he was already giving his eighth-grade coaches plenty to remember. The 2023 records show a player who could lead an offense, handle demanding defensive responsibilities, and set the tone for his teammates.
The saved team sheet credits Betts with 15 hits in 26 at-bats, five RBI, 10 runs, six stolen bases, and four walks. It records his batting average as .576 and his on-base percentage as .633. The hit and at-bat totals work out to .577 when rounded conventionally; the original sheet's .576 is preserved here as recorded.

His postseason evaluation adds a striking detail: zero batting strikeouts. That matters because consistent contact gave the offense a chance whenever he stepped into the box. His 15 hits also led the players listed on the saved sheet.
The pitching contribution was substantial, too. The coaching write-up credits him with 50 strikeouts through six games. He also served as the team's primary catcher, taking on two of baseball's most involved jobs during the same season.
What stands out in the original notes is the way he led. His coach described a calm, positive captain who organized warmups, worked consistently, and supported teammates through mistakes. Those observations give the numbers a human side: Gavin was helping shape the environment around him as well as producing.
That eighth-grade season deserves its own place in his story. These are historical middle school results, but they explain why his transition into high school baseball was worth following. He had already shown the contact, versatility, and leadership that make a young player valuable.
