Recruiting can produce an exciting headline before a family knows exactly what it means. A campus photo, an offer announcement and a policy proposal may all deserve attention, but each represents a different stage of the process.

A campus visit is an opportunity to learn about a school and its program. An official visit generally includes permitted expenses paid by the college; an unofficial visit is generally financed by the athlete or family, subject to the applicable rules. Neither label, by itself, establishes a scholarship offer.
That distinction matters when sharing recruiting news. A photo at a college game confirms the athlete was there. It does not confirm that the visit was official, that the athlete met with coaches or that a scholarship was offered.
An offer deserves a separate conversation. Families should ask the coaching staff exactly what is being offered: a roster opportunity, athletics aid, an admissions-support process or another arrangement. They should clarify the amount, conditions, timing and any written documentation rather than assuming every offer means the same thing.
A verbal commitment is also a different announcement from signing an athletics aid agreement. Accurate coverage should use the term that matches the athlete's actual stage.
The same care applies to policy headlines. The Senate passed the Protect College Sports Act on September 28 by a 77–22 vote. As of this October 7 update, it remains legislation awaiting further action, rather than a law that has already replaced current rules.
Families should separate three questions: What is proposed? What has been adopted? When does it take effect? A headline answering only the first question is not enough to change an athlete's plans.
The NCAA's current recruiting resources explain that communication and recruiting calendars vary by sport and division. For a specific visit, aid agreement or eligibility question, the college's compliance staff can help confirm which requirements apply.
Wolfe Sports' message is simple: celebrate progress, describe it accurately and ask clear questions. Understanding the next step makes recruiting news more useful to the athlete living through it.
