Recruiting Reality Check: A Camp Invite Needs More Context
Updated: 2 days ago
Opinion | Recruiting Reality Check.
An invitation can be exciting. Read the second paragraph before ordering the commitment graphic.
Families should ask whether an event is a broadly marketed camp, a selective evaluation opportunity, or a specific invitation following communication with a staff. The wording alone may not answer that.
Ask who will instruct and evaluate, what the cost covers, and whether there has been a conversation about the player’s graduation year and potential fit. Then decide whether the experience is worthwhile on its own merits.
A good camp can offer instruction and competition without being evidence that an offer is coming. Both things can be true.
Our criticism is aimed at ambiguity in the recruiting marketplace, not at attending camps or the athletes who celebrate an opportunity.
Keep the excitement. Add clear questions. Families deserve enough information to understand what they are paying for.
