The Role Player's Recruiting Film Should Tell His Real Story
Ohio high school basketball • Wolfe Sports analysis
A role player's film should explain the role he performs well. Filling a reel with rare scoring attempts can hide the screening, spacing, defensive attention and connecting passes that make him useful.
Role Player Film
Choose possessions with a clear beginning and enough context to understand the decision. A screen is more meaningful when the viewer can see the advantage it creates. A defensive clip should show the assignment and the recovery, not only the final loose ball.

Put the idea into a possession
Imagine a wing whose main job is guarding a scorer and keeping the offense connected. Several ordinary-looking possessions may show him denying a preferred catch, making the next pass and finding an opponent on a rebound. Those actions tell a more accurate story than presenting him as a high-volume creator.
Include full-game access alongside selected examples. Label the player and keep the editing restrained. Honest film does not require pretending that every contribution belongs in a box score. It requires making the actual basketball visible so a reviewer can decide how those skills might fit another group.
One detail to watch next
Ask whether a viewer can explain the player's role after watching the selected clips. If the reel suggests a job he rarely performs, revise it. The best presentation makes real contributions easier to recognize instead of constructing a different player through editing.
