A NIL payday can make a headline. A thank-you can give the story somewhere better to go.

Venmo’s September 16, 2026, announcement named UCLA basketball player Sienna Betts among nine athlete partners for the 2026–2027 school year. Seven of the nine compete in women’s sports.

The campaign, called Money Moves, gives participating athletes a way to receive a portion of their NIL earnings through Venmo and use the platform to give back to people in their communities. Betts described the partnership as a chance to recognize those who supported her.

This is a college-athlete partnership, included here as a model high school families can learn from. The release does not disclose her individual compensation.

Our takeaway: the people around an athlete can be part of the story without becoming background scenery. Gratitude and a clear brand fit can give a campaign substance.

This spotlight revisits the September announcement. Big-time coverage should explain what happened as well as why people might care.
